What each occasion asks of us
Every dharmik occasion has its own rhythm, its own light and its own idea of what a photographer should and should not do. This is how we approach the ones families call us for most.
Parna
Breaking of the fast+
A tapasya asks a great deal of a whole family, not only the person fasting. We photograph the morning it ends - the sangh arriving, the juice brought forward, the first sip - without flash, and we stay for all of it.
Varghodo
The procession+
The loudest and most public day of the passage: the chariot, the band, the rice and coins, possessions given away. We cover it with two people, one inside the procession and one ahead of it, on long lenses. Nobody is asked to pose.
Diksha
The renunciation+
The most serious day we are ever asked to photograph. No flash, no direction, nobody asked to look up - the white robes, the rajoharan, the blessing, and the family throughout. We follow the sangh on what should not be recorded.
Pujas and havans
Satyanarayan, snatra, abhishek+
Abhishek at the derasar, a snatra puja, a satyanarayan katha at home, a havan for a new venture. Short, crowded and almost always in difficult light - we work with fast lenses and the light already in the room rather than lighting it.
Griha pravesh
Housewarming+
The vastu puja, the kalash carried over the threshold, the milk boiled over on the first stove, the rangoli before anyone has walked on it. We also photograph the house empty, before the guests arrive - the frame families ask for most.
Sanskars
Naamkaran, mundan, annaprashan+
The small ceremonies, most often left to a phone and then quietly regretted. Short mornings of two to three hours, scoped and priced as such rather than treated like a small wedding.
Festivals
Paryushan, Diwali, Ganesh, Navratri+
Paryushan at the derasar, a Ganpati arriving and leaving again, a Navratri night, a Diwali the whole family finally came home for. For families, and for sanghs and trusts that need a proper archive of the year.
